PMP Certification: Requirements, Cost, and How to Pass
A plain walkthrough of PMI's experience rules, the three exam domains, member and non-member fees, and what renewal asks of you every three years.

The Project Management Professional (PMP) is issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI), and the hard part is usually eligibility, not the exam. You need documented project management experience — 36 months with a four-year degree, or 60 months with a secondary degree — plus 35 contact hours of project management education, all accrued within the last eight consecutive years (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
Once you qualify, the credential itself is a matter of weeks: PMI processes online applications in 5 calendar days unless you are audited (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023), and the exam fee is $405.00 for PMI members or $555.00 for non-members (Project Management Institute (PMI), undated).
What This Certification Covers
The exam is the Project Management Professional (PMP) examination, administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is a single computer-based exam of 180 questions, of which 175 are scored and 5 are unscored pretest items, with 230 minutes allotted including two 10-minute breaks (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2021).
The January 2021 PMP Examination Content Outline divides the exam into three domains: People, weighted at 42% of items, Process at 50%, and Business Environment at 8% (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2021). One training provider states the outline was rebalanced effective July 9, 2026 to People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%, across 26 tasks (Elite Minds, 2026). Because the weighting moves, download the current Examination Content Outline from PMI's own certification pages before you buy study material — it tells you exactly what the questions are drawn from.
No US state licenses project managers, so the PMP is not a legal requirement to do the work anywhere in the country. The pressure comes from employers. Government contracting and large IT, engineering and construction program offices are the employer types most likely to list the PMP as required rather than preferred, often because a client contract names it. It carries weight in that setting partly because the certification is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) against the ISO/IEC 17024 standard for bodies certifying persons (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023). Before you commit money, read ten job postings in your own city and sector and see whether the credential is a filter or a nice-to-have.
Eligibility Requirements
Each of these is a pass/fail condition set by PMI, not a suggestion. You must meet one complete education-and-experience combination, plus the experience recency rule.
- A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate degree or global equivalent) plus a minimum of five years / 60 months of unique, non-overlapping professional project management experience plus at least 35 contact hours of formal project management education (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- Or a four-year bachelor's degree plus a minimum of three years / 36 months of unique, non-overlapping professional project management experience plus 35 contact hours of project management education (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- Or a bachelor's or post-graduate degree from a program accredited by the PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) plus a minimum of two years / 24 months of unique, non-overlapping professional project management experience (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- All experience you count must have been accrued within the last eight consecutive years before you submit the application (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023). Older projects do not count, however large they were.
- "Non-overlapping" means two concurrent projects in the same month count once. Build your month-by-month count before you start the form.
- If you hold an active CAPM certification, the 35 contact hours requirement is waived and you do not document it (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- Graduates of a GAC accredited degree program receive a 12-month credit toward the work experience requirement and may use their GAC coursework to satisfy the 35 contact hours (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- You must be prepared for PMI's audit process, which can be triggered on any application (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023) — that means contactable managers or sponsors who will verify the projects you listed.
If you do not meet any combination above, PMI's own certification page states that candidates who are not eligible for the PMP may qualify to apply for the CAPM certification instead (Project Management Institute (PMI), undated).
Steps to Get Certified
- Audit your own experience first. Build a spreadsheet of every project in the last eight consecutive years, with start and end months, your role, and a sponsor who can confirm it. Overlapping months count once (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023). This costs nothing and decides whether the rest of the plan is possible now or in two years' time.
- Complete the 35 contact hours of project management education. This can come from a training provider's self-paced online course — one provider lists online training at approximately $259 (PMTI, undated) — from classroom training, or from GAC coursework if you studied at an accredited program (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023). Skip this step only if you hold an active CAPM, which waives the requirement (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- Decide on PMI membership before you pay anything. A course aggregator reports PMI individual membership at $129 per year plus a one-time $10 application fee, citing PMI's membership page (SimpliAxis, 2026). Set against an exam fee of $405.00 for members versus $555.00 for non-members (Project Management Institute (PMI), undated), membership usually pays for itself on the exam fee alone.
- Submit the online application at pmi.org. You enter your education, your contact hours and a description of each project. Online applications are processed in 5 calendar days unless selected for the audit process (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- Pay the exam fee and schedule your sitting through the scheduling link in your PMI account, choosing a test centre or an online-proctored slot. You then have a one-year eligibility period in which you may take the exam up to three times (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
- Sit the 180-question exam, then maintain the credential. If you fail, a retake costs $275 for members and $375 for non-members (PMTI, undated); after three failed attempts you must wait one year from your last exam date before reapplying (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023). Once certified, you need 60 PDUs in each three-year Continuing Certification Requirements cycle (Project Management Academy, undated).
Steps 2 to 6 are the only part that is genuinely in your control; the 36 or 60 months of experience sit in front of them.
Cost and Timeline by Path
All three routes end at the same exam. What changes is how the 35 contact hours are delivered and how much hand-holding you buy.
| Path or Provider | Total Cost | Time to Complete |
|---|---|---|
| Self-study (PMI membership + member exam fee + $75–$300 of study materials) | Roughly $900 to $1,150 in total (SimpliAxis, 2026) | Self-paced study, then 5 calendar days for application processing and up to three attempts inside a one-year eligibility period (PMI, 2023) |
| Self-paced online training provider + PMI membership + member exam fee | Course listed at approximately $259 (PMTI, undated) on top of the $405.00 member exam fee and $129 annual membership plus $10 application fee (PMI, undated; SimpliAxis, 2026) | Course completed on your own schedule, then the same 5-day processing and one-year eligibility period (PMI, 2023) |
| Classroom or instructor-led training | $1,500 to $4,000 for the course, plus exam and membership fees (PMTI, undated) | Fixed provider-scheduled course dates, then the same 5-day processing and one-year eligibility period (PMI, 2023) |
The self-study and self-paced online routes are the cheaper choice for most people who already manage projects daily, but they have a real cost: nobody checks your application wording before you submit it, nobody notices when you stop studying, and if you are selected for PMI's audit you assemble the evidence alone. Instructor-led training buys structure and a deadline, which is what some candidates actually need, at several times the price. A retake at $275 for members (PMTI, undated) is still cheaper than the gap between the two paths, so cost alone should not push you into a classroom if you study well without one. Fees change — confirm current amounts on PMI's certification and membership pages before you budget.
Frequently asked questions
How often do I have to renew the PMP?
The PMP runs on a three-year Continuing Certification Requirements cycle, and you must earn a minimum of 60 PDUs within each cycle to renew (Project Management Academy, undated). PDUs come from education and from giving back to the profession, such as volunteering or practitioner work. Track them in PMI's online system as you earn them rather than scrambling in the final months of the cycle.
What happens if I fail the exam?
You may take the PMP exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility period; after three failed attempts you must wait one year from the date of your last exam before reapplying (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023). A re-examination costs $275 for PMI members and $375 for non-members (PMTI, undated). Use the score report's domain breakdown to decide what to restudy before paying again.
Is the PMP valid in every US state and overseas?
Yes. The PMP is a certification from the Project Management Institute, not a state licence, so there is no reciprocity process and nothing to transfer when you move between states. It is also accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) against the ISO/IEC 17024 standard (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023), which is part of why employers outside the US recognise it.
Can I dispute my score?
PMI offers a manual hand rescore for paper-based PMP exams at a fee of $45 USD (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023). Computer-based results are scored automatically, so a rescore request is rarely the right move. Check PMI's current certification handbook for the exact process and deadlines before paying the fee.
What if I do not have enough experience yet?
PMI's PMP certification page states that candidates who are not eligible for the PMP may qualify to apply for the CAPM certification instead (Project Management Institute (PMI), undated). That is a useful interim step, and an active CAPM also waives the 35 contact hours requirement when you later apply for the PMP (Project Management Institute (PMI), 2023).
