The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is the entry-level project management credential from the Project Management Institute, or PMI (Project Management Institute, 2023). To sit for it you need to be at least 18 (Project Management Institute, undated), hold a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent, and complete 23 hours of project management education (Project Management Institute, 2023). The exam runs 150 questions in three hours across four content domains, and the credential has to be renewed every three years (Project Management Institute, 2023).

No state licensing board requires the CAPM, so treat it as a hiring signal and a structured introduction to the vocabulary of the field rather than a permission slip to work.

What This Certification Covers

The exam is called the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) examination, and it is issued and administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), a global professional association for project managers (Project Management Institute, 2023).

The CAPM exam content outline has four domains (Project Management Institute, 2023):

  • Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts — 36%
  • Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies — 17%
  • Agile Frameworks and Methodologies — 20%
  • Business Analysis Frameworks — 27%

That weighting tells you what the credential is actually about. Just over a third is general vocabulary and lifecycle concepts; the rest splits between traditional waterfall planning, agile delivery, and business analysis. If you were expecting a pure Scrum or pure Gantt-chart exam, it is neither.

The exam is 150 questions, of which 135 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions, with three hours allotted (Project Management Institute, 2023). There is a 10-minute break after you complete questions 1 through 75 (Project Management Institute, 2023).

On who requires it: nothing. Project management is not a licensed occupation in any U.S. state, and no regulatory body requires the CAPM to hold a coordinator or analyst job. Where it matters is as an employer-side filter — government contracting firms, large IT and engineering PMOs, and consulting firms frequently list a PMI credential as preferred in postings for project coordinator and junior project analyst roles, and some internal promotion tracks tie a step to holding one. Check the actual postings you intend to apply to before you spend money; if the roles you want ask for a PMP instead, or ask for no credential at all, the CAPM buys you less.

It is also worth knowing that the 23-hour education requirement forces you into a course regardless, so part of what you are paying for is structured exposure to PMI's terminology — the language used in tools like Microsoft Project, Jira and Smartsheet, and in PMI chapter events.

Eligibility Requirements

Every item below is pass or fail as stated by PMI. You either meet it or your application does not go forward.

  • You are at least 18 years old (Project Management Institute, undated).
  • You hold a secondary degree: a high school diploma, GED, or global equivalent (Project Management Institute, 2023).
  • You have completed 23 hours of project management education before you submit your application (Project Management Institute, 2023).
  • Those 23 hours come from an accepted source: a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a PMI chapter, an employer or company-sponsored program, a training company or consultant, a distance-learning company, or a university or college program (Project Management Institute, 2023).
  • You can document that education if your application is selected for PMI's audit process (Project Management Institute, 2023).
  • You submit the CAPM application through your PMI.org account and pay the exam fee.

Two things are not on the list. There is no work-experience requirement — that is the main difference between the CAPM and PMI's PMP credential, and the reason the CAPM exists for people with no project history. And there is no background check or fingerprinting requirement, unlike state-licensed occupations.

The 23 hours are the requirement most people get wrong. They must be project management education specifically, and they must be finished before you apply, not before you sit. A generic business course or an unrelated workplace training will not satisfy it.

Steps to Get Certified

  1. Complete the 23 hours of project management education. Use any accepted provider: a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a PMI chapter, an employer-sponsored program, a training company, a distance-learning company, or a university or college course (Project Management Institute, 2023). Keep the certificate of completion, the provider name, and the contact hours, because that is exactly what PMI asks for under audit.
  2. Decide on PMI membership before you pay anything. PMI lists an individual membership fee for the first year with a lower annual renewal rate thereafter (tutors.com, undated) — check pmi.org for the current amount. Membership matters because the member exam fee is $225 against the full non-member price of $300 (exampeople.com, undated), and the member renewal fee later is $60 against $150 (Invensis Learning, undated). Do the arithmetic for your own situation rather than assuming.
  3. Create a PMI.org account and submit the CAPM application. You enter your education and the 23 contact hours. PMI strives to process CAPM registrations in 24 hours or less unless the application is selected for audit (Project Management Institute, 2023), so this is usually a short wait, not a long one.
  4. Pay the exam fee and schedule your exam. $225 for PMI members, $300 for non-members (exampeople.com, undated). Once you are approved you have a one-year eligibility period in which to pass, and you may take the exam up to three times within that window (Project Management Institute, 2023).
  5. Study for roughly 40 to 80 hours spread over four to eight weeks (PM Drills, undated). Work from the CAPM exam content outline and weight your time to match the domains — business analysis at 27% and agile at 20% together outweigh the predictive content at 17% (Project Management Institute, 2023), which catches out candidates who revise only traditional planning.
  6. Sit the exam and collect the credential. 150 questions, three hours, with a 10-minute break after question 75 (Project Management Institute, 2023). Once you pass, the three-year renewal cycle starts (Project Management Institute, 2023).

Start to finish, if your 23 hours and your study overlap, a realistic timeline is two to three months.

Cost and Timeline by Path

The exam fee is fixed; the variable is how you get your 23 hours. Course prices differ by provider and country, so confirm the current price with the provider and the current exam fee on pmi.org before you budget.

Path or ProviderTotal CostTime to Complete
Self-paced online course from a distance-learning company or PMI Authorized Training Partner, taken as a non-member$300 non-member exam fee (exampeople.com, undated) plus the provider's course fee4–8 weeks of study at 40–80 hours total (PM Drills, undated)
Same self-paced route, taken after joining PMI$225 member exam fee (exampeople.com, undated) plus PMI membership (first-year rate, lower on renewal — tutors.com, undated) plus the course fee4–8 weeks, plus a day or two to join PMI and be approved (Project Management Institute, 2023)
Instructor-led bootcamp or university/college courseHigher than the self-paced route; a premium path combining the non-member exam fee with an instructor-led bootcamp or university program is estimated to cost more (Projeric, 2026)Typically fixed to the provider's cohort or semester dates rather than your own pace
Employer or company-sponsored programEmployer usually covers the 23 hours; you may still pay the exam fee yourselfSet by the employer's training calendar

A realistic total estimate for the common route is the non-member exam fee plus a course covering the 23 required hours (Projeric, 2026).

Most candidates are better served by the self-paced route, and it has a real drawback: nobody chases you. There is no instructor to ask about agile estimation when the material stops making sense, no cohort to compare answers with, and nothing stopping the four-to-eight-week plan stretching into six months. If you have failed to finish self-paced courses before, the fixed dates of an instructor-led or college course are worth the extra money.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I have to renew the CAPM?

Every three years, through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Program (Project Management Institute, 2023). Renewal requires 15 PDUs over the three-year cycle, with a minimum of 9 Education PDUs and a maximum of 6 Giving Back PDUs (4PMTI, undated). The renewal fee is listed at $60 for PMI members and $150 for non-members (Invensis Learning, undated).

What happens if I fail the exam?

You are granted a one-year eligibility period and may take the exam up to three times within it (Project Management Institute, 2023). Re-examination fees are listed at $150 for members and $200 for non-members (tutors.com, undated). After three attempts you must wait one year from the date of your last exam before reapplying for the certification (Project Management Institute, 2023).

Is the CAPM valid in every state, or do I need to re-credential if I move?

The CAPM is a credential from the Project Management Institute, not a state licence, so there is no state board, no reciprocity process and nothing to transfer. It is recognised the same way in every U.S. state and internationally. Moving affects nothing except which PMI chapter is closest to you for PDU-earning events.

What is the CAPM pass rate?

PMI does not publish an official pass rate for the CAPM exam, and any figure circulating online is a third-party estimate rather than a PMI number (exampeople.com, undated). Plan your preparation against the exam content outline and its four weighted domains instead of against a rumoured percentage.

How long does PMI take to approve my application?

PMI strives to process CAPM registrations in 24 hours or less, unless your application is selected for its audit process (Project Management Institute, 2023). If you are audited, you will need documentation of your 23 hours of project management education, so keep completion certificates and provider details from the start.
