Dental Hygienist Salary: What to Expect by Experience and State

Which published tables hold hygienist pay data, how experience bands are drawn, and the certifications and employer types that move an hourly rate.

Dental hygienist pay is quoted two ways: an hourly rate, which is how most practices actually hire, and an annual equivalent, which assumes full-time hours many hygienists do not work. The federal benchmark is the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) programme, whose May 2025 release publishes a national median hourly wage, a national mean annual wage, and 10th and 90th percentile annual wages for the occupation.

Those figures are revised yearly and differ sharply by state, so this guide tells you which table holds each number, how commercial surveys split experience bands, and what changes an offer.

National Average Salary

The national benchmark is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) programme, May 2025 release. It reports a national median hourly wage for dental hygienists and a national mean annual wage for the same occupation (BLS OEWS May 2025, as reported by medicalaid.org). Those are different statistics: the median is the midpoint, with half of hygienists above and half below, while the mean is the arithmetic average and is pulled upward by the top of the range.

The same release publishes a 10th percentile annual wage and a 90th percentile annual wage (BLS OEWS May 2025, as reported by Rippling). Write those two down. They bracket the distance between a new graduate in a low-paying state and a long-tenured hygienist in a high-paying metro, and a single national average tells you little without them.

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook also lists a 2025 median pay figure for dental hygienists in the occupation-comparison table on its dentists page (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025), which is useful if you are weighing hygiene against other roles in a practice.

To read the current amounts, open the OEWS occupational profile for dental hygienists on the BLS website and look at the national table, which sets hourly and annual wages at each published percentile side by side. Check the data period printed at the top, since OEWS is released roughly a year behind its reference month. One caveat specific to this job: the annual figures assume full-time, year-round hours, and many hygienists work a shortened clinical week. If that is your plan, negotiate against the hourly percentile rather than the annual one.

Salary by Experience Level

Federal data does not break pay out by years of experience, so experience bands come from commercial surveys and dental job-board data. These sources draw their lines in different places, so an "entry-level" figure in one may cover a different group than in another.

The DentalPost figure is hourly, which is how hygiene jobs are posted in most private practices — compare it with the OEWS hourly percentiles, not with annual survey numbers. Salary.com and SalaryExpert both let you filter by city or ZIP code, and the local version of a band is the number to bring to an offer conversation.

Progression in hygiene is flatter than in many clinical careers, because there are few rungs above chairside practice. Most movement between the entry and senior bands comes from relocating, changing employer type, adding permitted procedures, or stepping sideways into education or administration.

Salary by State or Metro

State medians are the biggest single driver of hygienist pay, and BLS OEWS May 2025 publishes a median annual wage for every reporting state.

To pull the amounts, use the BLS OEWS state table for dental hygienists, then the metropolitan area table beneath it. Metro figures inside one state often differ more than two states do, so check your own metro rather than assuming the state median applies to you.

Before treating a high-paying state as a pay rise, check its cost of living and its dental practice act. Scope of practice is set state by state, and the procedures a hygienist may legally perform are not the same in Alaska as in Texas.

What Affects Pay

  • Local anesthesia certification. In states whose practice acts permit hygienists to administer local anesthesia, certified hygienists command a published hourly premium over non-certified colleagues (Salario). The certification is only worth the money in a state that allows the procedure.
  • Other certifications. Certifications are reported to raise registered dental hygienist pay by a stated annual amount (Redent Klinik). Confirm which credentials your state board recognises first, since an out-of-state credential may not widen your scope at all.
  • Employer type. BLS OEWS May 2023 industry data reports a different mean annual wage for hygienists in Offices of Dentists than in Employment Services, the staffing and temp-agency category (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2023). Agency work usually trades benefits and stability for a higher posted hourly rate.
  • State and metro. State medians in BLS OEWS May 2025 run from one highest-paying state down to one lowest-paying reporting state (nuecareer.com). This is the largest variable in the data and the one you control most directly.
  • Hours worked. OEWS annual figures assume full-time, year-round hours. A shortened clinical week at the national median hourly wage (BLS OEWS May 2025, as reported by medicalaid.org) produces a materially lower annual total than the published annual figure.
  • Local demand. BLS Employment Projections publish a projected growth rate and a number of annual openings for dental hygienists (cited by Trade Colleges, August 2025). Tight local supply is what gives you leverage on rate.

How to Increase Your Earnings

  1. Price yourself against OEWS hourly percentiles, not an annual average. Open the BLS OEWS May 2025 table for your state and metro and use the published hourly percentiles as your floor and target. Most practices hire hourly, so a national annual average is the wrong yardstick.
  2. Add local anesthesia certification if your state permits it. Certified hygienists in permitting states command a published hourly premium (Salario). Check with your state dental board that the procedure sits within hygiene scope there, then follow that board's approved course route.
  3. Compare employer types deliberately. Use the BLS OEWS industry table (May 2023 data) to set the mean annual wage in Offices of Dentists against Employment Services, then weigh the difference against paid leave, benefits and guaranteed hours.
  4. Test a relocation against the state table. BLS OEWS May 2025 publishes a median annual wage for each state, including a highest- and lowest-paying one (nuecareer.com). Run any move against housing costs and the destination state's practice act.
  5. Re-benchmark at eight years. Salary.com (October 2026) and SalaryExpert (August 2026) both publish a distinct senior or "expert" band at 8+ years. Pull your local version of that band and bring it to a review rather than accepting increases off your starting rate.
  6. Look beyond chairside. Because pay flattens, hygienists wanting more than the senior band usually add clinical education, product sales, public health work or practice management — each with its own BLS occupation code and wage data.

Frequently asked questions

Which single source should I trust for dental hygienist pay?

Start with the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) May 2025 release, which reports the national median hourly wage, the mean annual wage, and the 10th and 90th percentile annual wages. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook separately lists a 2025 median pay figure in the occupation-comparison table on its dentists page. Use Salary.com or SalaryExpert only for the experience bands BLS does not publish.

Why do hourly and annual figures tell different stories?

OEWS publishes both a median hourly wage and a mean annual wage from its May 2025 data, and the annual figure assumes full-time, year-round hours. Many hygienists work a shortened clinical week, so their actual annual earnings fall below the published annual figure even when their hourly rate matches the median exactly.

Does a staffing agency pay more than a private practice?

BLS OEWS May 2023 industry data reports a different mean annual wage for dental hygienists in Offices of Dentists than in Employment Services, the staffing category. Pull both from the OEWS industry table and compare them after accounting for benefits, paid leave and guaranteed hours, which agency work often does not include.

Is the job market strong enough to support a higher rate?

BLS Employment Projections publish both a projected growth rate and an estimated number of annual job openings for dental hygienists, cited by Trade Colleges in August 2025. Check that page for current figures, then look at your own metro's employment level in the OEWS metropolitan table — local scarcity, not the national outlook, is what gives you negotiating leverage.
